Career Narrative
For the past 5 years, Cory has been working as an independent User Experience Design Consultant in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has partnered with design agencies, consulting firms, and organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, Chevron, Punchcut, Mekanism, Groove Eleven, Specific Impulse, and Crimson Consulting.
From 2002 to 2005, Cory worked as a Software Design Expert at Amdocs in Silicon Valley designing mission-critical web applications for Amdocs Customer Experience Systems (CRM, Support, Sales, Billing). The software suite is used in high-volume call centers and sales environments by the US Top 5 Telecom, Fortune 500, and the world's largest companies including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel, MetroPCS, Comcast, and DirecTV. His work helped Amdocs win CRM Magazine's Best Agent-Facing Universal Desktop Software and Customer Interaction Solutions Magazine's Product of the Year Award. Cory received 2 Outstanding Dedication Awards and 2 Certificate of Achievements from Amdocs.
From 2000 to 2002, Cory worked as a Lead User Experience Designer at marchFIRST/SBI in San Francisco. He led a team in designing web applications for Nortel ClarifyCRM. When Nortel sold ClarifyCRM to Amdocs, Cory decided to go to work directly for Amdocs so he could continue his work on ClarifyCRM.
From 1999 to 2000, Cory worked at iXL as a Senior Information Architect in San Francisco, and as a Senior Ecommerce Consultant in New York City. As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, he collaboratively completed tasks related to the design of the user experience including interaction design, information architecture, and user research. Cory received an XTRA Effort Award from iXL.
From 1998 to 19999, Cory worked at Hanover Direct as a Ecommerce Web Designer in New York City. He used his artistic skills to create the visual design and graphic design for the ecommerce web sites. He worked closely with product managers to collaboratively complete tasks related to the design of the user experience.
From 1996 to 1998, Cory worked as a Web Designer / Internet Consultant in Rochester, NY. He collaboratively and independently completed tasks related to the design of the user experience. He also used his artistic skills to create the visual design and graphic design for the web sites.
Cory received a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Information Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1997. He completed curriculum concentrations in Human-Computer Interaction and New Media Publishing. He graduated with a 3.8 GPA.
In 1993 and 1994, Cory worked as a Multimedia Designer in Columbus, Ohio. He produced final digital images of fabric patterns for ModaFinity Interactive Furniture software that allowed customers to view 3D furniture in combination with fabric patterns that could be custom ordered. He identified large repeat patterns in fabric samples; photographed the pattern with traditional camera; after photographs are developed, scan the picture; color corrected image against the original; edited and manipulated the pattern so it would repeat seamlessly on 3D furniture. He also maintained computer kiosks running the software in 5 furniture stores.
Cory was forced to leave college during his sophomore year at The Ohio State University after the tragic death of his father 1990. He entered the world of full-time employment at the age of 19.
Cory took a position as a Copy Consultant at Kinko's. He was soon promoted to Shift Manager on the night shift. He then took a position as a Production Manager, where he implemented efficient production schedule for daily and weekly high-volume copy jobs. He received a Best Organizer & Reorganizer Award from Kinko's in this position. He went on to work as Desktop Publishing Specialist, allowing him to further explore his creative interests with design and technology./div>
Additional Information
Cory resides in Berkeley with his lovely wife and tabby cat. He has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 10 years. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to music, seeing live music, watching documentaries, learning, drawing, and playing with toys.
Cory and his wife like to take road trips across California and the West Coast in their VW Eurovan. In the summer of 1997, Cory fulfilled a dream of his and drove coast to coast across the United States (and back). He visited cities, historical locations, national parks, and Americana sites. It was a month-long experience of interacting with the U.S.A.
Cory was born and raised in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. He is a visual thinker and was identified as intellectually gifted as a child. He attended Beachwood City Schools and was selected for and participated in a three-year Gifted and Talented Program for 6th-8th grade. He received a Best Art Award from Beachwood High School for his contributions to Introspective Magazine. He frequently took fine art classes at Cleveland Institute of Art in middle school and high school.
Cory's father owned a local chain of video game rooms in the early Eighties. Cory got to play video games endlessly for free at these arcades. He also attended multiple video game conventions with his father where he played video games to help him determine which games to purchase. Cory's house even had a Pac Man video game and a pinball machine. All of these experiences allowed him to interact with many different user interfaces and interaction models.
Cory has been using computers and going online for over 25 years. At the age of 12 in 1983, Cory designed, programmed, maintained a computer bulletin board system (BBS) using his Atari 1200XL computer with a 5.25" floppy disk drive and a 300bps modem. It connected to cyberspace through a second phone line out of his family house. (The BBS is an early predecessor to today's Social Media web sites.) Cory also attended Atari Computer Camps for two summers.
At the age of 6 in 1977, Cory saw Star Wars in the movie theatre over twenty-five times. It became an inspiration to his life. He remains an avid Star Wars fan today. He regularly watches Star Wars The Clone Wars, and continues to collect merchandise and poster art.
